WAKE UP, TEMPLE

WAKE UP, TEMPLE on W.H.I.P's Temple Student-Run Radio Station has joined with SEA to bring you live environmental news and entertainment. Every Wednesday at 10:00am, host Monica Sellecchia along with co-host John Infante bring you nationwide, worldwide, and Temple-related news.

The big kicker comes during the main segment: the "GREEN SCENE." WAKE UP, TEMPLE began the "GREEN SCENE" segment as a means to keep listeners updated on international, national, and local environmental news occurrences, advancements, concerns. Also, a big and very important part of the segment is how SEA gets the opportunity to advertise their events and urgent news reports. Podcasts of past episodes can be found on the media page of our website.

There is no better way to spend hump day than listening to the "GREEN SCENE" on WAKE UP, TEMPLE on Temple's only Student-Run-Radio Station. Get GREENERGIZED and listen live every Wednesday 10am-11am at www.temple.edu/WHIP. Check out WAKE UP, TEMPLE on Monday's and Friday's also at 10am-11am.

Remember what you throw out — It ends up in the environment

These fish are really dangerous, and they're everywhere.

In fact, they're probably in your room or house right now.

I know we're supposed to recycle. Sometimes it's inconvenient, sometimes it's impractical. Yet if we don't there's a chance that battery is going to explode and throw toxins into the oceans.

As Students for Environmental Action (SEA) we have to show the dangers of throwing stuff out to the rest of the world.

Each one of us needs to be a spokesman not just for the group, but for the environmentalist movement.

We need to inform ourselves about the issues in the environment — not just stuff that happens locally.

Because, according to the graphic, that local bottle might end up thousands of miles away.

Sustainability Day

The Office of Sustainability hosted Sustainability Day on Wednesday October 22nd. This is a nation wide event held on many college campuses, but this was the first time that Temple University participated. SEA contributed by having a table with Sustainability Trivia. We asked participants three questions on the environment or environmental issues, and those who had two out of three correct won a prize. The polar bear also made an appearance, and grabbed the attention of the passersby along with the bag monster.

SEA also hosted our second farmers' market on Liacouras Walk. We had the same vendors come out, but they all expanded their inventory. We also sold vegan sandwiches from Govinda's. All was a success, except the weather. Business would have been much better if it had not been so cold. If there are more farmers' markets to come, they will hopefully be held inside. The next farmers' markets will potentially be scheduled for November 18th and December 9th, both of which are Tuesdays.

Thanks for coming out it was an awesome day!!!

Farmer's Market

On September 16th, SEA hosted our first farmer's market on campus. It took place on Liacouras Walk, scheduled from 10-2, but actually ran from 9-5. It was amazingly successful, and all of the participators are eager to come back, and it seems like Temple's population would love for it to return as well. We had five individuals to come out and sell; John King brought Amish goods and fresh fruits and vegetables. He sold out of all of his baked goods. He works at the UPENN market every Thursday, and he said he was impressed with the turnout at Temple, it may have been an even greater volume of students than at Penn, and next time he will definitely bring more goods. Mary Jane sold handmade bags that she weaves together using plastic bags. She sold half of her stock! More than she ever has at any market. Mary Anne sold her homemade vegan baked goods. She had quite an array of goodies at her table when she arrived and sold out by one oclock. Katie makes her own "green zines". She came mostly to people watch, and was quite surprised that she sold a decend amount of her zines! And Jerry brought his homemade jams and pie fillings, of which he sold more than half of his stock. He also brought apples, pears and cider from a local farm, and was able to sell out of cider. I was also representing Joe's coffee. Joe had me sell his fair trade, locally roasted coffee and homemade granola. That was gone by noon, and I had many people come afterwards asking for more coffee.

The Office of Sustainability has offered to fund another farmer's market! We have asked them all to return for Sustainability Day on Wednesday October 22nd from 11-2. And Jerry has offered to come back around the holidays time as well to sell his jams again-great Christmas present for Mom! Thank you everyone who came out to support the farmer's market, especially those that were able to volunteer!

First Post

Hello everyone! Last week was Students for Environmental Action's first meeting and it was great to see all 60 of you there!

This year we're focusing on 5 different categories: energy conservation, recycling and waste management, paper and recycled materials, transportation, and education and awareness. We focus on local and campus related environmental issues and we also work with Sierra Student Coalition.

We are currently working on our website which will be put altogether very soon and I will post the link. When it is up you will be able to access the events section of our website to see our google calendar with information about all of our events and activities. Also our meeting minutes will be on the website so that you can see what we discussed if you were unable to come to the meeting.

You can email me, Jess, anytime at seaprez@temple.edu. I look forward to reading your comments and thoughts about what you want to do with SEA, things you would like to see changed or accomplished on campus, or any other environmental concerns you may have.
